Children entering formal schooling come to the classroom curious. Primary teachers find students internally motivated to learn and they come to school deeply interested in finding out about the world around them.
Primary students want to smell, touch, see, hear and taste all sorts of new things in their world. They are imaginative and creative but think in concrete ways, not abstract ones. They have a short attention span and learn best through repetition and memorization. They love to acquire facts but their brains have not yet formed to the degree that they can understand the logical relationships between those same facts.
Students at this stage in life do well studying phonics, spelling, dates, events, math facts, geography, plant/animal classifications, names of presidents, foreign languages and many other isolated topics.
